View In:   ArcGIS Online Map Viewer

Name: Shoreline_Characteristics_BeachSMART

Display Field: name

Type: Feature Layer

Geometry Type: esriGeometryPolyline

Description: mapped in The California Coastal Zone Atlas (Habel and Armstrong, 1977). The Atlas was digitized by Melanie Coyne using the NOAA 2020 coastline as a spatial reference and segmented dynamically to align historical shoreline environments with modern coastline geometry. The layer characterizes shoreline and backshore environments, dominant geomorphology, and development setting along the entire California coast. It provides a consistent spatial framework for interpreting coastal geomorphology and human modification patterns in statewide resilience studies and publications such as Living with the Changing California Coast (Griggs, Patsch, and Savoy, 2006). Original Source: Habel, J.S., and Armstrong, G.A. (1977). The California Coastal Zone Atlas. California Coastal Commission, Sacramento, CA. Digitization: Coyne, M. (2000). Digitized from Atlas plates using NOAA’s 2000 high-resolution coastline to ensure geometric alignment.Segmentation and Attribution: Dynamic segmentation applied to NOAA coastline to transfer categorical shoreline environment data from 1977 Atlas.Update: Revised and standardized by K. Patsch (2003) for use in statewide coastal morphology synthesis and Living with the Changing California Coast (Griggs, Patsch, and Savoy, 2006).Intersected with County Boundaries to add the County attribute to the data (2024).
